About the Presentation

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is on a journey.  We strive for “Empowering people.  Saving wildlife.” and we recognize that to save wildlife, we have to take care of our own backyard.  That means identifying and implementing efficiencies to reduce negative effects on the environment and, ultimately, benefit the environment and surrounding communities.  It means setting an example and sharing it with our more than two million visitors per year.  It’s not always easy, practical, or affordable, but we are on our way towards net zero carbon emissions.  This presentation will discuss our initiatives and sustainability culture – partnerships, successes, challenges, and future outlook.

Michael Kreger, Ph.D., Vice President of Conservation

Kristeena Blaser, Director of Sustainability

Dr. Michael Kreger is the Vice President of Conservation and Sustainability at the Columbus Zoo.  He works with all the departments at the Zoo, The Wilds, Safari Golf Club, and Zoombezi Bay to develop and promote programs that save animals worldwide.  He manages the Conservation Department which includes the Partners In Conservation (PIC) program and the Columbus Zoo Fund For Conservation.  Before joining the Zoo, he had a 20-year career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) as a biologist in International Affairs, Deputy Chief of Bird Habitat Conservation, and Special Assistant to the Assistant Director of Migratory Birds.  His academic background includes three degrees from the University of Maryland. He earned his bachelor of science in conservation and resource development, his master’s research focused on applied ethology and animal welfare, and his doctorate research examined the effects of the captive rearing methods on the survival of whooping cranes reintroduced in central Florida.  He’s also a dad to two 24-year old boys.
