Electrical Density Gauge Model E Development 1996 -2022
The Electrical Density Gauge Model E (EDGe) is used for determining the in-situ density and water content of compacted type I or II base, or native soil materials that are compacted in-place on highway project or other shallow foundations. The EDGe quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) system is lightweight, easy to use, accurate, and non-nuclear. The EDGe consists of two independent units, the laboratory sensor is used to establish the correlation between the electrical and physical character of the aggregate material. The correlation data is uploaded to a field sensor for use during the in-situ field testing. The pair of EDGe sensors work together to ensure real time precise and accurate field measurements for QA/QC. The EDGe provides a direct correlation between the proctor test data of a representative aggregate/soil sample in the lab and readings of the same material in the field.
EDGe Practice and Use under ASTM D 7698-21 and AASHATO T 339-22
The process of using the EDGe for construction (QA/QC) relies on the aggregate material’s empirically derived correlation between the electrical and physical properties. An aggregate material compaction test is performed as per the ASTM 1557 Modified Proctor Test using a six- inch steel proctor mold. After each proctor point a steel electrode is inserted in the compacted material and electrical measurements are taken and then correlated with the density and the water content for the point. After a five-point proctor test is completed, there is sufficient data to establish the correlation algorithm between electrical and physical character for the aggregate material. EDGe field testing uses three electrodes in a triangle pattern (ground electrodes) and one electrode in the center (current electrode). The EDGe field tests take electrical measurements in the aggregate material and uses the correlation algorithms that were established during the proctor test to calculate the in-situ aggregate materials density in pounds per cubic foot or kilograms per cubic meter as well as the water content.
Geometry of Laboratory and Field EDGe Equipment 1996 - 2021
The geometry and electrical geophysics of the laboratory equipment are radically different from the geometry and electrical geophysics of the field equipment. The six-inch steel proctor mold is considered a bound space. The geophysical properties of the aggregate material that is tested in the proctor mold are bound by the geometry of the steel mold that confines the flow of electricity within the mold. The EDGe field electrode set that is installed in the aggregate material for field QA/QC testing are considered a boundless half space because the electrical measurements of the aggregate material are not bound by any confinement. The term “half space” relates to the air above the aggregate material that is being field tested. Establishing the physical and electrical relationship between the laboratory and field-testing equipment took years of research and development with breakthroughs occurring in 2018 and 2019. Dennis Anderson, et al were issued United States Patent Number 11,041,796 titled Analysis of Porous Material Using Laboratory Calibrated Test Apparatus and Sample Data on June 22, 2021, that discloses the technologies that are used in the new Humboldt Mfg. EDGe.

Founding partner and the research manager for Electrical Density Gauge, LLC established in 2000. Dennis holds seven US and over 45 international patents or patents pending status on geophysical engineering for soil testing and has been the lead inventor of the electrical density gauge (EDG). Dennis’ engineering and management skills led the development team that invented and commercialized the electrical density gauge instrument, which is a technology for quality control testing of soil foundations and highway base materials. Electrical Density Gauge technology for quality control testing of aggregate material foundations and highway base materials is certified internationally under ASTM D-7698-21 and by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials under AASHTO Standard T 339-22. The technology is currently being used in the USA and 40 counties around the globe. NASA plans to use the technology on the moon for launch pad construction.

CPD Hours
A certificate for one (1) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hour will be issued at the conclusion of the program.
LOCATION
This will be an OUTDOOR in-person event.
It will be held at an outdoor shelter at Blendon Woods Metro Park (see the attached meeting flyer below for map and photo of the shelter.) This is an open air shelter that is covered. There are restrooms and parking dedicated to the facility. There will be plenty of room so you can maintain distance as you are comfortable.
